Gift Ideas for Gadget Lovers

Vehicle gadgets. They are everywhere these days, from built-in entertainment systems and key fobs that remotely start your vehicle, to parking assist systems and backup cameras that eliminate dangerous blind spots. If you're looking for a gift for that gadget lover in your life, or if you're creating a wish list for yourself, you don't have to go with a totally new vehicle to get all the bells and whistles. In fact, there are lots of extras that you can buy separately.

One such is a safety must-have if you have to have your digital media while you drive: a new Drive+Play II from Harmon Kardon. It lets you connect your cell phone, iPod, and satellite radio (plus other devices) together in a single backlit display. Control all of them with a turn of a knob.

Too lazy to turn on your wipers manually? The Rain Tracker RT-50 does it for you with water sensors. Whether hit by rain, sleet, or snow, its infrared beams sense wetness and turn on the wipers. Shut it off when entering a car wash. This is the original equipment manufacturer for many rain sensors that come built-in to today's vehicles, so you know it's worth its $149 price tag.

If the kids are already jaded by their DVDs during car trips, why not get them satellite TV? KVH Industries offers a state-of-the-art system with a small receiver that mounts on your vehicle's rooftop. The TracVision A7 ($2,995) puts DIRECTV, including local channels, right on your car's video screens. Best of all, it works with virtually all video systems, including those with S-Video inputs.

Remember that gadget lovers are always in need of adapters, batteries, cables, and storage for their gadgets!

One caveat: Be sure your homeowner's or renter's insurance covers the aftermarket accessories, and that your car insurance covers the built-ins if stolen or damaged in an accident. Otherwise, your gadget could be more trouble than gift. Many of these gadgets come with hefty repair costs. Installation prices are dropping, but repair and replacement prices are not.
