Changing Your Name
Driver's Licenses and ID Cards
To change your name on your Maryland driver license or ID, you can go to a full-service MVA station with proof of your correct name. Marriage certificates, birth certificates, passports or court ordered documents are best. Make sure to also bring your current driver license or ID.
Your Social Security information must be current before Maryland will issue an updated license. Visit Social Security Online for more information about affecting a name change.
When you pay the appropriate fees, MVA will issue you a corrected driver license and if you're older than 21, the expiration date will be reset to five years from the date you get the correct license.
Registration and Titles
Once you change the name on your driver's license, MVA automatically changes your name on your registration and title.
If you want to change your name only on a title or registration, you still have to go to a full-service MVA station with proof of your correct name (marriage certificate, court ordered documents, birth certificate, etc). Make sure to bring your current registration and title certificate.
You'll still have to pay the applicable fees.
