Why Get an ID Card?

If you do not own a Maryland driver license―or any license from any state―you might mull over applying for an ID card. While this will not enable you to operate a vehicle on the roads, it will come in handy for just about everything else that requires proof of who you are and how old you are. This can include getting on to an airplane, checking out all the trendy clubs in town, buying a bottle of wine, and more important things like opening a checking account.

ID Requirements

Before you head down to an MVA office to begin the ID process there are a couple of basic requirements you need to meet. If you don't, then there is no reason to waste the gas just to be turned away when it is finally your turn in line. Both are crucial.

First, you need to reside in the state of Maryland and provide two forms of evidence to verify the fact. A healthy appetite for steamed crab does not qualify as proof of residence.

The second is pretty much a no-brainer, considering that if you have a driver license or another state ID card, you most likely would not go to the trouble to obtain another. But just in case you had other ideas, you cannot possess a valid driver license and apply for a state ID card.

With these points established, you are ready to head down to a local MVA office. Along with the two documents showing that you are indeed a Marylander, you will need one other type from the state's acceptable identification list.

You will also need to let the examiner in on the secret of your Social Security number. However, it will not be listed on the actual ID card. Applicants are no longer required to fill out a paper application; the MVA has jumped into the digital age.

Fees and Renewals

The fee for an ID card is $15. It is free of charge to those ages 65 and older. For ID cardholders under the age of 16, ID cards are valid for only two years at a time, with a renewal fee of $5. ID cards for those over the age of 16 are valid for a period of five years, with a renewal fee of $15. Expiration dates fall on the cardholder's birthday.

Maryland ID cards must be renewed in person at your local Maryland Motor Vehicle Association office.

Replacing Your ID Card

To replace a lost, stolen, or damaged card, visit your local MVA office and tell them you need a duplicate ID.

You'll need to provide your Social Security number, proof of identity, proof of age, and proof of Maryland residency. Check the state's list of acceptable documentation before you head out.

Fees:

  • $20 for applicants 16 and older
  • $10 for applicants younger than 16
