In the unfortunate event that you're involved in an accident, you should follow certain procedures set by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).

It's your civilian responsibility as a driver, whether in Maryland or in another state, to check if everyone in the accident is OK. If someone is injured, call an ambulance and give aid to the best of your ability.

Supply the Necessary Information

Once you've made sure everyone is safe, follow the directions below:

  • Exchange your car insurance information, driver license number, and license plate numbers with all involved parties.
  • Provide this same information if a police officer is present.
  • Call your insurance company as soon as possible.
  • If anyone in the accident has been injured and a police officer isn't present, you need to file a report to the MVA within 15 days, even if you're not at fault.

You don't need to file a report if the only damage is property damage, regardless of the dollar amount.

Note: Accidents aren't fun, but if you're uninsured, they're even less fun. Insurance compliance is serious business in Maryland, and you may lose your license if you're driving an uninsured vehicle.

If You Were Injured

Along with vehicle accidents often comes personal injury.

If you or anyone else in your vehicle becomes injured during a car accident, you may want to consult a personal injury attorney before agreeing to any out-of-court settlements.
